Post-Graduation Work Permit: How and When?

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an Open Work Permit obtained after studying in Canada. There are certain conditions that shall be met to become eligible to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit. Generally, a study of two or more years allows the graduates to obtain a 3 year Post-Graduation Work Permit. However, successful completion of full-time study of one year may only allow an individual to obtain 1 year of Post-Graduation Work Permit.

I am eligible for Extension. How do I apply?

You can

– Opt into a simplified process to extend your Work Permit, or

– Apply to extend your Work Permit, or

– Apply to Restore your status and get a new Work Permit

What’s a Simplified Extension Process?

IRCC has sent emails to opt-in for an extension of up to an additional 18 months. These messages are arriving from the email addresses ending with @cic.gc.ca OR @notifications.canada.ca and may have a subject line as 2023 Special Measure: Opt-in for Valid PGWP Holders.

This may allow the candidates to extend their PGWPs at no Government Fee. This option is only available until 20 May 2023.

Am I eligible for a Simplified Extension Process?

To be eligible for a simplified Extension Process, you must meet the following:

– Reside in Canada

– Have up-to-date details on the IRCC account such as; your mailing address, your Passport information (with an expiry date of June 2025 or later)

What if I don’t have my IRCC account?

If you do not have an account, you will need to register for an IRCC Secure account. You can then link your most recent PGWP Application to your account.
